(1) PS Berger's (Finding Spring, rev. 1/15) soothing, rhythmic text guides readers through the wonders of a garden at night, directly addressing them in hushed tones: "If you are very patient and very lucky / you might catch a glimpse of a shooting star." Those stars, bats, the ever-changing moon, and the not-so-scary-after-all foxes and wind appear in intricate cut-paper collages composed of "found ephemera and scraps of paper, including ticket stubs, receipts, and ancient ledger books." Berger's attention to detail in the art, alongside her sophisticated and accessible text, creates a magical nighttime world. This spellbinding picture book will undoubtedly hold children in that glorious tension between wide-eyed curiosity and heavy-lidded drowsiness before they drift off to sleep.

(4) PS Berger's appealing collage art shows a boy trying to fly a kite and a girl trying to cross a stream "When the winds are wild / And the path unclear." Though some young readers may want more of a story about the two kids, the book's ultimate message about the power of love, community, and togetherness is nevertheless admirable and timely.

(3) PS As their mother repeatedly recites their nightly routine ("Good-night stories. Good-night songs. Good-night hugs. Good-night kisses. Good-night hugs. Again"), three little bunnies think of ways to delay sleep (monsters, jumping, tickles, etc.) until their mother has finally had enough. A soothing rhythm in this cumulative call-and-response story, along with Berger's impressive, dominantly blue collage art, makes this an excellent bedtime selection.

(2) PS As most bears start to think about hibernating, little bear Maurice can only think about experiencing his first spring. His mother soon falls asleep; Maurice sets out in search of spring, and his journey introduces many creatures preparing for winter. Berger's three-dimensional collage illustrations are done in rich colors with interesting patterns and scraps of fabric, catalogues, typewritten letters, etc.

(4) K-3 An omniscient narrator describes how children spend one snowy day: "Sasha and Max showered Oscar / with a wild flurry of snowballs, / while Willa climbed to the top of a big mountain," etc. Alas, because this hymn to winter is plotless, the gorgeous cut-paper collages don't add up to more than the sum of their picturesque parts.

(2) PS A bird and a bunny play together from spring to fall, miss each other while the bird winters in the south, and have a joyful reunion in the spring. The slight story is redeemed by its serene cut-paper collage illustrations with their generous expanses of spring green, sunny yellow, night blue, or shadowed winter snow. A lovely window onto the seasonal round.

(4) K-3 Double-page spreads feature the word go and illustrations of human- and birdlike creatures driving cars. Then a lone citizen yells "STOP!" and admonishes everyone to find another way ("Use your feet, Pete"; "Take a hike, Spike"). The mixed-media illustrations, though chaotic, have verve. (3) K-3 In this gentle, poetic tale about change, Little Yellow Leaf clings to a branch thinking, "I'm not ready yet." Holding tight as the snow falls, Little Yellow spots Little Scarlet Leaf. Strengthened by each other, the two leaves leap and "into the waiting wind they danced...Together." Mixed-media collages, stylish, precise, and varied, glow in rich autumn colors.

(4) K-3 Insects partying at an underground cabaret, a doomed friendship between a crocodile and a goldfish ("He sucked poor Goldie in his mouth and / GULP! / His friend was gone")--these are just two of the subjects portrayed in these peppy but unmemorable and sometimes awkward short poems. More satisfying is the colorful collage art featuring an assortment of quirky characters.
