Colorful, squiggly germs with alarmed cartoon faces swirl all around the three curious children at the center of this useful and entertaining book by the team behind A Hundred Billion Trillion Stars (rev. 1/18) and Power Up (rev. 3/19). In Fishman's funny, conversational text, a scientist explains to the children that many of the rules they hear from grownups ("Cover your mouth when you cough"; "Don't eat off the floor") help keep them safe. The scientist goes on to define germs as microbes and identify the different kinds (bacteria, viruses, protozoa, fungi, helminths); show where they can be found inside and outside the human body; and explain what we can do to protect ourselves from illness. Both the bright, cheerful drawings and the author's note encourage children to see germs as a natural part of our world. The chatty, sometimes silly text plays off Greenberg's lively illustrations, which are full of movement and details to pore over. The text mentions the role of vaccines as a line of defense, and COVID-19 is explicitly discussed in the author's note. A nonthreatening and informative introduction to a topic about which children may have many questions and concerns today.

(1) PS Illustrated by Jessixa Bagley. A child is the first in the house to wake up and ponders what to make of the day: "Maybe I will do whatever I want to do." In a nod to choose-your-own-adventure types of books, and perhaps even David Macaulay's classic Black and White (1990), subsequent spreads include four separate vignettes, representing the child's options and rendered via Bagley's (Daisy, rev. 4/21) expressive, detailed watercolors with ­pencil. Perhaps it's a good time to make breakfast, draw with crayons, ride a scooter, or garden. The vignettes first appear in separate circles, but then shift in size and shape as the child considers these options. Each is awash in its own color so that readers can easily follow with page-turns: the rose-colored series of images reveals the child's fantasies of an undisciplined life (eating marshmallows to excess); the yellow series showcases creative tendencies; the lavender one depicts a daredevil spirit; and the jade one shows success in overcoming fears without parents around as guides. There is understated humor in Fishman's (Power Up, rev. 3/19) text ("That was too many marshmallows" next to an illustration of feet dangling from a perch on the toilet); courage (sticking a tongue out at scary spiders); and fond nods to the parents ("I can always go back inside and find Mom if I'm scared"). What the child ultimately chooses to do, a heretofore unexplored fifth option, is a sweet surprise. An adventurous tribute to the imagination of children and a day's endless opportunities.

(2) K-3 Illustrated by Isabel Greenberg. This broad-strokes introduction to human physiology explains how energy powers all the body's processes. The text presents information with clarity, humor, and wonder. Greenberg's digital illustrations match the celebratory tone, with a brown-skinned girl with two puffball pigtails at the forefront. The color-saturated spreads play with pace and scale, and motifs of light and energy waves radiate from the pages. An author's note offers further explanation about how energy works.

(1) K-3 Illustrated by Isabel Greenberg. Fishman and Greenberg engagingly highlight the wondrousness of numbers, stars, and just about everything about our home planet. Fishman exchanges science writing's traditional stiffness for a confiding tone. Greenberg, too, eschews physical correctness in her kinetic digital art: she presents kids who hoist the earth, fly around the world, and otherwise defy the laws of physics in order to illustrate the ideas presented.

(3) YA Mia and her friends reach the other side of the Well, where their knowledge of the source is used for political leverage among the city's Keepers. Meanwhile, Jimmy and Odessa escape Sutton's soldiers and attempt to stop the outbreak of the virus in Fenton. This suspenseful science fiction sequel's innovative world-building and tense atmosphere will satisfy fans of The Well's End.

(3) YA When a bizarre disease that accelerates aging locks down her boarding school's campus, sixteen-year-old Mia and her friends stage a daring escape. If they can reach her father's secretive, subterranean office at mysterious Fenton Electronics, they will find a cure--and, hopefully, an explanation. This suspenseful sci-fi adventure ends with a cliffhanger that will leave readers eager for another installment.
