In their fourth book, sisters Maple and Willow pick out their first real Christmas tree. Once the tree is inside, though, Maple cannot stop sneezing, so the tree is moved outside. Willow blames Maple for the loss of the tree, but her anger and Maple's hurt feelings are short lived; the resolution is creatively festive. Digitally colored pencil-on-mylar drawings highlight the spirited siblings' emotions.

In this third book (Maple; Maple & Willow Together), Maple starts "big-kid school," leaving little sister Willow lonely at home. After Maple carries on about kindergarten, Willow makes an unusual friend and brags right back. The resolution is childlike and tender--standard for this lovable duo. Nichols's pencil drawings with gauzy-soft digital coloring use full spreads and tidy vignettes to explore every feeling.

When she was "still a whisper," Maple's parents planted a tree. The pair grows up together, and Maple is a thoughtful playmate and caring friend (in autumn, she gives the bare tree her jacket). Before too long, her considerate habits prove useful for big-sisterhood. Nichols's emotive pencil drawings, glowing with digitally applied color, narrate much of this gentle, cyclical companionship story.

Maple welcomed little sis Willow in Maple. In this follow-up, the pair does everything together--reading, sleeping in the same bed, even communicating in tongues (i.e., Pig Latin)--until a tiff over dandelion-collecting. An almost-immediate truce saps some tension, but their bond is sweet and Nichols's adorable, gently emotive pencil drawings with luminous digital coloring stand out.
