The collection includes twenty-eight poems by Zolotow, published in the year of what would have been her one-hundredth birthday. The brief poems capture small seasonal moments, providing an approachable start for first-time poetry readers: "A moment in summer / belongs to me / and one particular / honey bee." The theme of seasonal change is echoed throughout the colorful digitally created illustrations of nature and people celebrating it.

Fletcher the fox, worried that Santa won't find the rabbits in their new burrow, builds a trail to point St. Nick in the right direction. A squirrel, some birds, and three mice pitch in; arriving at the rabbits' new home, they all enjoy pie and Christmas songs. Beeke's painterly illustrations mirror Rawlinson's transportingly descriptive text.

As Fletcher the fox appreciates signs of spring in the forest, he's shocked to see what he thinks is a late snow shower. He warns his friends about the cold weather, but they discover the snow was actually falling flower blossoms. The story is slight, but the pastel illustrations depicting woodland scenes dappled with sunshine are as inviting as warm weather.

A lonely kazoo-playing duck heads south and makes new friends. When he gets homesick, the friends accompany him back, to the tune of the trusty kazoo. The simple, jaunty verse with a punctuating "zu zu" refrain beckons listener participation. The watercolor palette ranges from cool and pale to warm and vibrant, reflecting seasonal change and the shift from sadness to joy.

A tired boy heads home, saying "...this is the way to...." But every time he's about to finish his sentence (and the rhyme), a different farm animal interrupts. Accompanied by an animal parade, he reaches his room at last and speaks the much-anticipated final word: "...bed!" Soft, attractive illustrations in springtime colors feature animals that are amiable without being too sweet.

"Squeaky chairs, / secret stares, / coloring sheets with teddy bears. / Broken crayon-- / someone shares. / This is our first day." Lyrical, rhythmic, impressionistic rhymes full of memorable concrete details distinguish this first-day-jitters book from many of its ilk. Delicate watercolor and acrylic illustrations capture the young narrator's mixed emotions about an almost universal experience.

Mommies and daddies love their babies as instinctively as monkeys love bananas and lions love to roar. This book gives mom and dad equal time by flipping the text and pictures halfway through. The first half proclaims mommy's love in nicely scanning rhymes about animal activities. Flip the book over and it's daddy's turn. The range of (gorgeous) colors provides plenty for baby to look at while listening to the reassuring rhymes.

After discovering the words wish, change, and friend in a book, a solitary pig wishes for change and friendship, and finds both. The whimsical story, with its minimal plot, is overly instructive, as if written with adult approval in mind. However, the uncluttered illustrations have child appeal, as well as a good deal of charm.

When the farmyard animals need a diversion, they wander into town and discover the library. None of them can make themselves understood by the librarian--until the hen enters and clucks, "Book! Book! BOOK!" Soft, naive watercolor paintings illustrate the satisfying story, which, with its witty conclusion, will be a sure winner at story time.
