Stuffed bear Teddy (A Bear in War) chronicles his experience accompanying English siblings William and Grace as they travel across Canada to stay with a host family for the duration of World War II. Oil paintings add warmth and emotional depth to the bear's sometimes awkward narration. A brief explanatory text follows the story and provides further historical context.

Brothers Joe and Cody, their parents, and pet dog Ootsie, along with the family's eight-husky sled-dog team, go ice fishing. When the dogs spy a fox, they take off after it--dragging Mama and Joe along. The book, with its bilingual format (English text followed by Cree translation), cream-colored paper, and richly textured paintings, is handsome and useful.

In this book based on the true story of ten-year-old Charlotte Haines, who lived in 1783 New York, her stubborn, fiercely patriotic father banishes her after she sneaks off to bid Loyalist cousins good-bye. She ends up exiled to the Nova Scotia wilderness along with them, never to see her immediate family again. Odd details and an abrupt ending, along with static illustrations, detract somewhat from the fascinating story.
