The Vowel family finds that "Tlkng s vr hrd" without vowels; reading this story proves them right. One by one the Vowel children--Alan, Ellen, Iris, Otto, Ursula--are born, and the family becomes easier to understand. Aunt Cyndy saves the day when Otto gets lost. Exaggerated illustrations, kept in check with a muted palette, round out the tale.

A boy is finally tall enough to ride the Dino Coaster, and his dad goes along to calm his son's jitters. But when the boy wants to jump back in line, Dad is the one who's scared. While readers will guess the ending of this predictable story before the first drop of the coaster, Luthardt's acrylic illustrations are invigorating.
