Pasha, a haughty wolfhound on stage as an extra, has an unexpected moment of glory when she out-sings an opera singer during a performance. Whisked off stage, the heartbroken canine is consoled by a less sophisticated dog--a mutt--and she chooses to befriend him rather than act like a diva. Warm illustrations accompany the slight story.

A rollicking rhyme tells of a town's feast preparations for a bunch of visiting pigs ("ten thousand at least"). After gorging themselves on twice-baked spaghetti, apple brown Betty, etc., the pigs put on a show for the town. Oller's loose watercolors juxtapose undersize chefs and oversize victuals to great effect. Despite the tale's emphasis on gluttony, this is pleasant, lightweight entertainment.

The soft, humorous watercolors in this rhymed counting book show one dog setting out for a walk, two dogs chewing a bone, and so on up to ten dogs entering the park, and then many dogs playing there. When the dogs grow restless, the counting begins again, from ten back down to one. Individual dogs don't reappear in the illustrations, but the mood is unabashed, sloppy fun.

In this silly story, Mrs. Brown's sixty cats snooze all day and play wildly at night. Oller's free-flowing watercolors show piles of pudgy cats yielding patiently to Mrs. Brown's loving attention (including manicures) during the day, only to start throwing confetti, knitting, or working with clay after she has gone to bed. Although the mild ending is disappointing, the rhyming text celebrates the capricious behavior of cats.
