The bi-racial family featured in Who's in My Family heads off to the amusement park, where the kids and their parents notice and discuss the ways peoples are similar and different. In her straightforward, casual text, Harris writes about eye color, hair texture, and other physical and personality characteristics. Wescott's cartoon illustrations are as friendly and clear as the informative text.

The creators of What's in There? and Who Has What? introduce nutrition to the youngest set. The straightforward text covers healthy eating, personal preferences, allergies, and more, while speech bubbles and pictures show siblings Gus and Nellie's mixed-race family planning a picnic and visiting a farmer's market, community garden, grocery store, and park in their urban neighborhood. Sunny illustrations underscore the upbeat tone.

Harris's confident and open interracial family is expecting a new baby. Without explaining how "half of this cell comes from a woman's body. The other half comes from a man's," the narrator describes the growing fetus as it develops fingers, then fingernails, begins to kick, and finally arrives. Harris's text is informative and matter-of-fact; Wescott's illustrations are just as approachable and helpful.

On a trip to the zoo with their parents, a mixed-race brother and sister engage in a discussion of how families may differ from one another in where they live, what they eat, what they look like, and so on. Westcott's cartoon illustrations are inviting, but Harris's lists of attributes and differences can be dizzying to read.

Harris explains how boys and girls are a lot alike but also anatomically different. A brother and sister start the conversation on their way to the beach. Harris gradually moves from personality traits to physical characteristics, very naturally introducing differences as the siblings, separately, change into their swimsuits. Enhanced by Westcott's friendly ink and watercolor illustrations, the tone is lighthearted but never too silly.

A simple rhyme introduces young readers to gardening, with special attention paid to where vegetables grow relative to the ground ("Corn grows up. / Carrots grow down. / Cucumbers climb around and around"). The glorious illustrations star two kids, a father figure, and cheerful bugs, birds, and critters, some of which partake in the end-of-book vegetable-based feast.

"When your teacher asks a question, / Wave your hands a lot, / Then when you're called to answer, / Say that you forgot." Young Miss Information offers non-traditional etiquette advice, beginning each poem with a quote from the experts. The humor stems from the contrast between what's suggested and what children know is expected. Westcott's energetic illustrations add zany touches. Bib.

After umpteen haphazard return trips home to retrieve forgotten items, a family of seven finally makes it to the beach--just as a storm hits. Short lines of rhymed text let the hilarity unfold as the saga grows increasingly preposterous. Lively illustrations capture the silly fun and the frenetic pace of a good day gone bad, then good again.

In Hoberman's revision of the familiar children's song (musical notation provided), Yankee Doodle, his gal, and some animals (including a poodle) open up a noodle shop; their menu includes--what else?--apple strudel. The nonsensical story is clearly just an excuse to rhyme up a storm, but the lyrics scan, and Westcott's loose, detailed images gamely capture the spirited silliness.

It's April Fools' Day on the farm--or is it? A rollicking, rhyming text and Westcott's comic illustrations match the silliness of this story that has chickens running amuck and goats destroying the wash, at least according to the grandkids. But Grandpa isn't fooled--until Grandma manages to trick him and gets the last laugh.

"Beets. Meats. Ham. / Peanut butter. Jam." This brief, rhyming romp through the market captures the chaos a toddler in a shopping cart can create. Westcott's humorous illustrations show the mayhem that follows mother and child down the aisles. The book, printed on sturdy card stock, is sure to please little ones who spend much time in this supermarket hot seat.

Todd's mother pesters him to keep up during their walk through the park. When he presents her with a box of park artifacts (e.g., leaves, a pine cone, an acorn) he has collected, she is thrilled. A more charming story couldn't have been crafted from sixty-four simple words, and Westcott's art in springtime hues is effervescent. The book ends with "Think about It" questions and two activities.

New snow is celebrated in verse that will have preschoolers chanting along by the second reading. A young girl builds a snowman, sleds with a friend, and quickly recovers from a crash, rounding off with a return indoors for cocoa. Westcott propels the proceedings with spring-loaded, cartoony drawings and cheery colors, adding a dog and kitten for additional bounce and humor.

In each of three books, the adapter expands the lyrics to a familiar children's song (music provided), taking it in an unexpected direction (e.g., the legendary lamb ban is rescinded at Mary's school). Not all of the rhymes are winners, but Westcott's loose, detailed watercolor and ink images succeed, and the books may inspire young readers to attempt their own irreverent revisions of the classics. [Review covers these Sing-Along Stories titles: Mary Had a Little Lamb, The Lady with the Alligator Purse, and Skip to My Lou.]

Four sisters have a lot of fun--and make a lot of messes, which they blame on one another with a chorus of "She did it!" The generally light and crisp rhyming narrative describes the energetic girls, building naturally to their decision to clean up. The accompanying cartoon illustrations freely and dynamically portray their good times.

Westcott's comic watercolors enhance this somewhat awkward rendition of the silly song. Tied to a train track as punishment for eating three red shirts, a goat saves his skin by coughing up the clothes and using them to flag down a train. He offers the shirts to the animals on board but ends up eating the clothes anyway. A few bars of music are printed on one of the endpapers.

Trying to catch her runaway dog, Mrs. McNosh chases George through a pond, a wedding reception, a baseball game, and a fountain--but only manages to catch a trout, a bouquet, a fly ball, and a cold. She returns home, where playful George greets her at the door with her slippers. Told in rhyme, this amusing follow-up to two earlier books about Mrs. McNosh is illustrated with Westcott's lively watercolors.

Hoberman adapts and adds to the nonsense song about Michael Finnegan whose whiskers grow "in-igan"; verses include relatives who disparage how he plays his violin-igan, and finally, his acquisition of an appreciative dog, Quinn. The light mood and sharp lyrics of Michael Finnegan's changing fortunes are playfully interpreted by cartoon-style watercolors with plenty of humorous details. Music to the song is included.

First the cow and then the rest of the farm animals get the flu, so a little boy treats them just the way his mother treats him. He plies them with tissues, belly rubs, and board games until the recovered animals are sent out to play. Westcott's familiar farm animals bring just the right silliness and chaos to this enjoyable if unoriginal tale.

This small board book edition loses nothing in the new format. The story is an extended poem, adapted from the popular clapping game and song, which explains the further adventures of Mary Mack, her silver buttons, and the famous jumping elephant. Westcott's illustrations are as silly as the subject.
