When Robbie's mother dies after a mastectomy it becomes the defining moment of his life. During the next several years, Robbie directs his anger and hatred toward Dr. Robert Knox, the Edinburgh surgeon who performed the operation. The fully realized 1822 setting and the character development of a young man facing internal and societal demons make this novel memorable.
