Following her mother's near-death from cancer, Davia spends a summer caring for her dying great-aunt at the family's Louisiana plantation. While there, she befriends a ghost, Emilie, and learns the story behind Emilie's untimely demise. The story is slow and relentlessly gloomy but ends on a hopeful note, with Davia able to overcome some of her fears about death.
