After being rescued from drowning by a renowned privateer, aspiring author Sherwin reluctantly becomes part of the ship's crew and falls for Katharine Westing, a young woman who boards the ship with a plan to regain her family's wealth. Though the climactic sea battle is disappointingly brief, the novel's wealth of incident and period detail makes for an entertaining adventure story.
