An elderly witch and her cat get ready to prepare some clams for dinner but are overcome by sympathy for them. When the clams start crying and then singing, the witch agrees to help them get home. A gentleness pervades this tale, emphasizing the personal transformations achieved by small kindnesses. The fine-lined black-and-white illustrations are lively and amusing.
