When his farm burns down, killing his parents and brother, Kipp steals Gwali the Death Catcher's sack so Gwali can't collect any more souls. But Kwaja, the sack, has a mind of its own. Kipp's grief and his understanding of death develop slowly throughout the novel (as does his relationship with Zalika, his landlord’s spirited daughter), culminating in a thought-provoking ending.
