Pohl, an archaeologist, has re-created a brutal and highly political story of Mixtec royalty from a deer-hide codice (pictograph manuscript) still extant. It tells the genealogy of Lord Eight Deer, his thwarted efforts to marry Lady Six Monkey, and the battles that ensue. The tale is complex and almost impossible to follow, but the accompanying explanatory material, photos of artifacts, and Pohl's paintings will interest young archaeologists.
