In this third supernatural case study (Diary of a Haunting; Possession), Melanie discovers her shoplifted journal has mystical powers. As Mel and her friends' spell-casting escalates in seriousness, the "Book of Shadows" increases in strength and malevolence. Mel's diary entries tend toward the histrionic even before all hell breaks loose, but some genuinely scary scenes and unsettling spot art will satisfy horror fans.

Plagued by visions and bizarre physical symptoms, blogger Laetitia fears she is possessed. Others suggest her suffering indicates a divine calling, and her death weeks later--as a martyr of a Black Lives Matter–like movement--seems to confirm this interpretation. Verano's exploration of faith and timely social justice concerns adds some depth to an otherwise run-of-the-mill gory-horror thriller.
