Jane Brocket's Clever Concepts series.
More celebratory than scientific, this entry in the concept-book series superficially explains the seasons. As usual, Brocket's crisp, attractive photos do an excellent job of reflecting the descriptive language ("Spring feels fresh and cool and breezy"; "Fiery sunsets match the colors of the leaves"). Kids will eagerly answer the question at book's end: "Which season do you like best?"

Brocket's latest concept book offers a straightforward and engaging overview of the body's five senses. Her accessible, descriptive language is clearly illustrated by crisp, brightly colored photos bringing the "sharp spikes" of a cactus and the "loud sounds" of "traffic honking" to tangible life. Kids will eagerly take on the final challenge: "Which senses are you using now?"

"How many fruits in a row? How many socks in a box? That's right, seven." A chipper narrative encourages readers to count numbers one through twenty via gallery-quality color photographs. Brocket has an eye for finding her chosen numbers in fresh places (e.g., six flowers stitched into some fabric), but she's not against setting the stage (e.g., a sixteen-cookie tower).

This attractive book explains what patterns are and how they can exist in nature or be created by organizing objects in different ways. The striking color photos provide dozens of examples of interesting patterns all around—in fabrics, nature, man-made structures, and decorative objects. The book serves as an engaging introduction to patterns as observed in science, math, and art.

In a text that is occasionally unclear, Brocket invites the reader to explore shapes through objects seen every day (candy, windows, bricks, quilts, etc.). Attractive color photographs of these items depict flat and solid shapes: circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, and more advanced shapes like pentagons, hexagons, and octagons, among others.

The concept of texture is introduced with bright, full-page color photographs of familiar items. Each is accompanied by descriptive words for the ways in which items such as tiles (smooth), slippers (fluffy), jam (sticky), rocks (hard) feel. The choices of textures to feature are appealing, but the accompanying descriptors lack variety and do little to bolster scientific vocabulary.
