Ready-to-Read series.
Illustrated by
Buket Erdogan.
These easy-reader editions (originally published as picture books Mouse's First Fall and Mouse's First Summer, respectively) feature "slightly different text" but keep the same low-key, season-themed adventures of adorably inquisitive Mouse and big sister Minka. Question-and-answer texts ("Over there, Mouse finds something green and tickly. / What is it? A grassy hill!") and Erdogan's original round-edged illustrations are both appealing. Review covers these Ready-to-Read titles: Mouse Loves Fall and Mouse Loves Summer.

In this easy reader version of the picture book Mouse's First Day of School, Thompson describes what Mouse finds when he rides to school in a backpack: "Mouse finds juice. Mouse finds fruit and cookies. It is snack time! Sip, slurp, crunch!" Mouse also finds "his favorite thing. Mouse finds friends!" Illustrations in glowing colors provide appealing close-ups of Mouse and his discoveries.

In this eighth book in the series, two mice run, jump, and hide in the fallen autumn leaves, admiring their different colors and shapes. This entry includes the playful language featured in earlier titles, and, as usual, the rich colors and rounded shapes in the textured paintings are a pleasure to view.

In the sixth book in this series, Mouse and his mother explore the outdoors on a "windy spring day." Momma identifies the wildlife they discover, such as a butterfly ("something glittery and flittery") and a frog ("something green and peeping"). The textured illustrations, with their rounded figures, are easy on the eye, and the playful language adds appeal.

Two mice hitch a ride in a picnic basket and experience the colorful delights of summer, described in Thompson's evocative text: "Drippy, sweet, / wet, / red watermelon"; "Oh, so high, / bright / blue sky"; "Sweet-tart sip, / yellow / lemonade." Illustrations with rich colors and pleasingly rounded animal shapes give a mouse's-eye view of the summer day, which ends with a fireworks display.

Thompson describes what Mouse finds when he rides to school in a backpack: "Squiggle, scribble, dot crayons! / Ssip, slurp, crunch snacks!" and children, of course--"Wiggly, giggly, best of all friends!" Illustrations in glowing colors provide appealing close-ups of Mouse and his discoveries; the toe of a sneaker, for example, takes up most of one page.

"What could it be? wondered Mouse." In his third holiday adventure, little Mouse shadows his sister as she finds various objects, then cuts, folds, and pastes red paper, white lace, and red ribbon to create a valentine. The simple, textured illustrations suit this story. With its interactive text, this square-shaped book makes an entertaining read-aloud.

In this nearly wordless book, a talented mouse scampers around Miss Bumbly's house while she sleeps through the night. The nocturnal critter watches television and makes a pancake breakfast for Miss Bumbly before scurrying back into a mouse hole. Miss Bumbly's lack of reaction to the breakfast that greets her in the morning is somewhat odd. Fetching acrylic paintings on canvas give the illustrations a textured appearance.

When Mouse takes a walk one spooky night, he sees and hears creepy, rustling things. As he investigates, he discovers they are merely bats or leaves--"not so scary after all." Then he hears a knocking and finds trick-or-treaters. The resolution to the story is shown in the appropriately dark, whimsical illustrations when Mouse returns home with a piece of candy corn.

In this night before Christmas, the only creature stirring is a little mouse, who finds all sorts of wonderful things--a "sweet and sparkly" cookie, some "warm and melty" hot chocolate, a "jingly and glinty" jingle bell. The hint-and-tell format lends itself perfectly to reading aloud; the toasty warm, textured illustrations cinch its seasonal appeal. This book will put readers and listeners in a Christmas mood.
