Julia may play differently than most kids, but Elmo doesn't mind: both like building blocks, toy cars, and tablet games. While swinging (another favorite), Abby joins them on the playground. Elmo's casual description of Julia's autism emphasizes his organic acceptance of her, which helps Abby and Julia become friends, too. This Sesame Street story positively models inclusion, as do the recognizable illustrations.

Martin Provensen.
In this collection originally published in 1951, the Provensens lend their two-dimensional but expressive style to Stevenson's rhythmic, child-voiced 1885 poems. Several poems are omitted, likely because of changing cultural attitudes, and there are small modifications in sequence and layout. The digitally restored illustrations are more muted than in previous editions; the effect is a pastel, child-friendly volume with appeal to the nursery-rhyme set.

Leonard Weisgard.
This reissue gathers stories and poems about rabbits. Weisgard's richly layered illustrations are carefully reproduced; they are both a product of their time and an invitation for a contemporary child to look at woodlands in a new way. Brown's text fully inhabits a rabbit's world.

On Christmas Eve, a lone sailor at watch witnesses the arrival of Master Chief Claus and his squadron of helpers as they deliver presents to the slumbering fleet at sea. The loose illustrations are caricaturish, but the rhymes are fairly precise. This treatment of Moore's classic poem may be best appreciated by military families.

This book about the beloved denizens of Busytown is based on recently discovered Lowly Worm sketches done by Richard Scarry, "finished and colored" by his son Huck. Very loosely following a day-in-the-life structure, there's a little bit of everything for preschoolers: school, body parts (humorous, given Lowly's physique), manners, counting, vehicles, a search-and-find game, etc. It's all typically busy and comfortably familiar.

Little Golden Book series.
This song follows the traditional format with each verse highlighting a farm animal and its sound. The humorous cartoon illustrations, however, add a silly story line: the animals become progressively more rambunctious and Old MacDonald looks more and more unsettled by their behavior. Finally everyone invades the farmer's bedroom to serenade their friend. A musical score is appended.

These quickie retellings of "Rapunzel," "Beauty and the Beast," and "Toads and Diamonds" play second-fiddle to illustrator Laite's blue-infused compositions. The tales zip through their basic plots, while the art conveys mood and setting. The stylized pictures have mid-century style, but this reissue isn't a necessary purchase for folktale collections.

Paleontologist Bakker and paleoartist Rey chronicle the evolutionary rise and fall of dinosaurs in this volume--a tribute, of sorts, to the 1960 Giant Golden Book Dinosaurs and Other Prehistoric Reptiles. Sweeping, large-scale realistic and pseudorealistic illustrations fill the oversize pages with active prehistoric scenes, while the text delivers the up-to-date science in easily digestible sections. Pronunciation guide appended. Ind.

Kids are treated to a robot-palooza of sorts: they'll marvel at the robot-centered sights described in tight, peppy rhymes ("Tractor robots plant and plow. / Robots even milk a cow!"). Staake supplies his trademark geometrically decisive images in colors so boisterous and in scenes so joyful that they manage to make the largely mechanical cast seem huggable.

Suggestions for games, crafts, magic, experiments, art projects, and puppetry are enlivened by cartoony retro illustrations and match the text's upbeat mood. A blanket advisory to use caution for some projects is included on the copyright page.

Meg and Ted play, explore, do their favorite activities, and try new things. Most sentences in the simple, repetitive text begin: "Today is a good day" (the one exception being midday meal: "It is always a good day for lunch!"). The whole adorable package, including throwback Dick-and-Jane-style illustrations, is right on the borderline of too precious.

Based on the titular Christmas song's lyrics, this slight book portrays a down-the-chimney visit to a boy and girl. Digital-looking cartoon illustrations showcase Santa's "cap on head, / suit that's red. / Special night, / beard that's white." Fans of the popular song may enjoy the cheery visual depiction.

Dr. Squash attends to the dolls' ailments. When he falls sick, the dolls use his techniques to heal him. The details of imaginative play are right on target for the audience. Brown's story (the text is slightly revised, though it's still a little dated) is reissued with fresh illustrations that maintain a friendly, old-fashioned appearance.

Sugar-mad biped poodle Pantaloon is rebuffed by a baker hiring help. After the man injures himself tripping over Pantaloon's bike, the poodle proves his worth. This newly illustrated edition is old-fashioned in the best sense, with the rip-roaring story intently focused on one purpose: to entertain. Linked to no particular era, Salerno's jam-packed illustrations are thoroughly invigorating.

Animals gather to decorate a fir tree and celebrate Christmas together. Wahl's quiet, reverent text is extended by Weisgard's art in which the lines of the animals' fur connect them visually with the fir tree's needles, unifying the pages. This new edition, though essentially unchanged, has a slightly different format than the original.

In this silly story (first published as a Little Golden Book), the rag man's violent sneezes cause lots of mix-ups. The offended parties track down the rag man and help him sneeze everything back to normal. The text is labored, but the fresh, spirited illustrations help modernize the story.
