When Elephant finds Gracie's book, he sniffs it, snuffles up the words, and sneezes out a jumble of letters. His animal friends are no help in undoing the damage, but when Gracie discovers her empty book, she patiently helps Elephant re-form words and reads the story to him. The understated, dancing line-and-watercolor illustrations breathe life into the simple new-friendship story.

Bob the rooster learns a variety of animal noises before discovering how to crow properly. When a fox threatens the hen house one night, however, Bob's loud "cock-a-doodle-do!" doesn't work: he must use all the animal sounds he knows to frighten the fox away. Pearson's spirited illustrations for her funny tale give Bob a distinctive, enthusiastic personality. Storytime audiences will crow over this one.

Big-bellied and white-bearded Joe runs "Joe's Snack Bar," doling out treats all summer long, but where does he go in winter? Humorous watercolor illustrations show patrons imagining Joe, among other things, on a cruise and on a safari with elephants carrying ice cream cones in their trunks. Even though Joe "won't tell a soul," the final picture, showing Joe in a red suit with reindeer sampling his cones, suggests he winters at the North Pole....
