Kip has the confidence and attitude to bet on just about anything with his high school friends. When his girlfriend's father takes Kip under his wing, the teenager is drawn into an all-consuming world of horse racing, slot machines, and online betting. The school scenes suffer from unnecessary hyperbole, and the conclusion isn't convincing, but this edgy novel believably captures the nightmare of compulsive gambling.
