Soccer School is back in session, with a third course-load of engaging soccer trivia tied to different subjects--history, zoology, physics, etc. A chapter on health, for example, focuses on sleep (its mechanics, purposes, and stages), then shares players' strategies for optimizing their Zs (one team, Southampton, traveled with its own mattresses). Pun-filled cartoon illustrations and end-of-chapter quizzes add to the fun.

Illustrated by
Ellen Rooney.
This stirring picture-book biography introduces Switzer, the first woman to run the Boston Marathon with an official race number (having registered as "K. V. Switzer"). During the race, officials tried to block her path, but she evaded them and continued, determined to show that "women deserve to run too." Throughout the text, Chaffee repeats the sound of running feet ("Pat, Pat, Pat"), setting the pace and building momentum. Rooney's mixed-media collage illustrations add emotional depth and effectively use perspective. An author's note adds further biographical and historical details. Bib.

Matthew Shipley.
This lively alphabet book features common soccer terms ("J is for Juggling") and famous superstars ("K is for King"--Pelé, of course) as well as less familiar jargon and players: "D is for Derby" (rivalry match); "M is for Maestro" (Italy's Andrea Pirlo). Littlejohn's writing is expressive and dynamic, and Shipley's illustrations pop with playful details (Holland's Johan Cruyff plays soccer amid bright-orange tulips).
