Jake and his prospector pa get a pet pig, which sets off a chain of events that leads to their prosperity. Pa talks about having good luck, but Jake believes less in luck and more in action. The sunny story is told in a deliberately deadpan, unruffled tone. The thickly applied, intensely colored pastel illustrations feature odd perspectives and deep purple shadows.

Addy's lyrical text traces the changes the millennia have brought to a Wisconsin field, where a modern-day farmer unearths a Civil War button, an ancient Indian arrowhead, and an Ice Age bone. The artwork--saturated watercolors flanked by soft pencil sketches of thematic motifs on double-page spreads--complements the contemplative tone. Together they quietly, evocatively put time in perspective.
