In this trilogy conclusion (Trial by Fire; Fire Walker), witch Lily and her coven find themselves in a strange, otherworldly city. She hopes to finally stop the monstrous Woven--but that may mean nuclear war or joining forces with her evil alternate self, Lillian. Lily's struggle to make choices that will both protect her people and maintain her humanity should keep readers captivated up until the unfortunately rushed ending.

Romance takes a backseat to intrigue as the plot unfolds and everyone's secret plans are revealed. Series fans will enjoy seeing what happens in this second installment; multiple questions left frustratingly unexplored may keep them hooked.

Setting the stage for a new trilogy, Angelini's focus is on character development and world-building at the expense of plot and the story's romance.

The gods have escaped from Olympus, but with her powers multiplying every day, Helen will be a match for them--unless one of her friends or lovers turns traitor, as prophesied. Angelini closes the trilogy (Starcrossed; Dreamless) with nonstop action, though the constant point-of-view switching and frequent flashbacks hinder deep reader investment in the plot's major betrayals, battles, and passionate liaisons.

As Helen's Underworld quest to free the Scions from the Furies begins to threaten her health and sanity, Lucas seemingly abandons her. When a new Scion comes to her rescue, the starcrossed lovers become a triangle. Despite Angelini's graceless prose, this book is just as compulsively readable as the first (Starcrossed), raising the stakes with a gory, breathless, and suspenseful cliffhanger.
