Savitri's boyfriend Corey is killed and her best friend, Holly (Corey's sister), is injured by a seemingly senseless shooting. With the killer at large, Holly teeters on the brink of sanity. The narrative alternates among Savitri's voice; a second-person narrator; and Holly's perspective, told through first-person text and dramatic graphic novel–style interludes. Avasthi delves deeply into the pysche of both girls.

Sixteen-year-old Jace shows up on his older brother's doorstep, having fled their sociopathic father's abuse. As the brothers work through their past, the story gains depth, culminating in a trip to rescue their mother. Jace's narrative voice strikes a commendable balance between being distinct and being typical. The plot's suspense is perfectly counterbalanced by the nuanced relationships between various characters.
