To make this useful volume less daunting, Baker divides her word "stories" into various subject categories in sixteen chapters. Headings such as "Math Magic & Science Synergy," "Spectacular Sports," and "Military Madness" will help young readers find a topic that particularly intrigues them. Words are listed alphabetically within the sections, and pronunciation guides are in the index.

Self-taught artist Rembert, raised by sharecroppers, was almost lynched and ultimately jailed for participating in a civil rights demonstration. While in prison, he learned leather work and is now a celebrated folk artist. Eleven of his leather paintings, documenting events from his life, are reproduced here and accompanied by Rembert's own insightful text. Though overdesigned, this book rewards close examination. From the Old Kingdom through the Ptolemaic Period, this thick volume gives detailed biographies of ancient Egyptian royalty as well as some advisers and other individuals. The substantial, documented information is well organized and illustrated with black-and-white photos of artifacts, but the dense, serviceable prose makes it more suitable for the initiated than for novices. Several appendices extend the text. Bib., glos., ind.

Profiles series.
More than forty portraits of notable Romans, both well known and obscure, provide insight into ancient Roman life, from daily routines and religious practices to warfare and political structure. Punctuated with black-and-white photographs, art reproductions, and maps, the lengthy book (with double-columned text) lacks the spark of color photos or artwork. Included are four appendices and an interesting list by profession of people profiled. Bib., glos., ind.
