Less-focused than other volumes in the series, this survey discusses the early history of drugs in the United States, the way drug abuse leads to crime, various governmental drug policies, and topics such as rehabilitation and drug trafficking. Each volume describes symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment of a wide range of specific problems. Because such a broad range is covered (Childhood has topics from mental retardation to attention-deficit disorder), some information is superficial. The staged, often misleading black-and-white photos and illustrations are too dark but, like the case histories, include a wide range of ages. Bib., glos., ind.
