Illustrated by
Bill Slavin.
A kindly frog helps a duckling conquer her fear of swimming by asking a variety of birds to tell her how they overcame their own fears. With its clever internal rhymes and amusing twist at the end, the jaunty poem is fun to read aloud; it delivers its message with a light touch. Painted in acrylics on gessoed paper, the textured illustrations lend the characters personality.

Rachel Berman.
An insult crushes Miss Mousie's confidence and provokes her to wear a disguise on a "mystery date." When her date also hesitates to show his true colors, they "call a truce" and decide to be themselves. The rhyming text is as peppy as the characters are charming in this story of love and self-acceptance. Berman's muted, old-fashioned-looking watercolors are softly detailed.
