In Bliss's nearly wordless book, told mainly through panel illustrations, ordinary-looking Grace sneaks out of her dads' NYC apartment at night to creatively raise money to buy a companion for class guinea pig Gus. Deadpan Grace remains hilariously impassive, her little Mona Lisa–esque smile the only hint of her extraordinary measures. Cameo appearances and visual jokes fly fast and furious throughout Bliss's giddily gleeful tale.

In his second adventure, irrepressible Bailey--the only dog in his class--is excited about the Museum of Natural History field trip. Though his classmates are well behaved, Bailey's actions repeatedly land him in the doghouse. The straight narrative and speech-balloon text provide a clear view into childlike Bailey's active mind. Bliss's varied illustrations keep the tone light and the action moving.

Bailey loves school. Then again, he's the only dog at Champlain Elementary. Straightforward sentences tell a day-in-the-life story while pithy speech and thought bubbles bring on the giggles. Children will love watching Bailey read and write, put his own spin on arithmetic, and try to trade food at lunch. Most of the spreads have details that will be revealed upon rereading.

Toon Book series.
In this comic-format easy reader, a boy chases after a flock of pigeons, tearing through Manhattan into Brooklyn while his panicked father mounts a search. Funny dialogue and visual mini-stories (check out the cameo appearances by Tintin, Olive Oyl, etc.) complement Luke's excited progress. This latest Toon Book sets child-friendly storytelling against a welcoming cityscape.
