Genteel (and nearsighted) Miss Jaster never notices the hedgehog she sprinkles with flower seeds as she plants her garden. "I'm in bloom!" Hedgie cries one day and dances out of the garden. Miss Jaster enlists the help of a constable to retrieve her runaway flowers; eventually she and Hedgie become friends. Accompanied by illustrations washed with soft colors, this gently humorous story retains an appealingly old-fashioned sensibility.

Illustrated by
Erik Blegvad.
Blegvad re-illustrates this nonsense poem (previously published in a collection of Bodecker's verse) in the style of the late author-illustrator, his beloved friend. A progressively disheveled Mary engages in frenzied preparations for winter, all at the imperious behest of her rotund husband. She finally snaps, and he ends up wearing his tea. Blegvad imbues the illustrations with a warmth and humor that lighten Mary's weary toiling.
