Colorization by Lauren Pettapiece. Burton's classic tale of the little locomotive who decides to take off on her own adventure one day, wreaking havoc all along her route before being rescued, has been reissued in a new colorized edition. Burton's original charcoal illustrations were bold and dynamic enough as they were; the new colors don't add much.

While Calico, first published in 1941, always was a Christmas story, the publisher has amped up the holiday appeal by adding a red-foil-accented jacket and replacing Burton's innovative range of paper colors with just red and green. The tale of a horse who leads a stampede to thwart a holdup and save a stagecoach full of gifts remains delightfully loopy, as do the pictures.

"The story of Life on our Earth from its beginning up to now" is presented as a marvelous drama. Each right-hand page is a stage setting showing changes across geological periods, with clear, explanatory text opposite the picture. Burton's research skill and artistic genius contribute to a book for many ages that can be enjoyed year after year; this is an updated edition.

Burton's classic tale of a country house gradually encroached upon by urban sprawl is reissued as a board book. Although the text is too long to fit comfortably in the new format, the reproductions are clear and the story is as delightful as ever.

This Spanish translation of 'Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel' captures all the charm and tension of the original story. A classic tale that does not lose anything in the translation is a treat to have in a Spanish edition.
