Zoey's brokenhearted soul has fled to the Otherworld, and her body will soon die if her friends can't retrieve her; meanwhile, Stevie Rae struggles with forbidden romance and betrayal. Awkward, slangy dialogue is wince-worthy, but the series' expanding mythology is engaging. Rapid switching among seven points of view and multiple story lines makes for a dizzying but page-turning read.

In this fifth House of Night fantasy, High Priestess Zoey Redbird and her friends battle Kalona, a fallen angel determined to claim her for his own evil needs. Although intense and entertaining, this installment drops readers into Zoey's life of vampires, fledglings, and gods with little anchoring; even some returning readers may feel adrift.
