Lolly feels homesick while visiting Auntie Zep, so together they consult The Secret Remedy Book and carry out seven projects--including writing a cheerful letter and planting a seed. The cozy illustrations, with their delicate tints, fine sketchy lines, and numerous insets, borders, and tiny details, are aimed right at girls, with whom this book's almost-magic will resonate.

When Grandmother sends her family out to gather firewood, each person comes back with shredded clothing and a wild excuse for returning empty-handed. Grandmother gets no firewood, but she makes a warm quilt with scraps from the torn clothing instead. The rationale for the "far-fetched stories" is never given, but the conclusion is one anyone can enjoy. Pen-and-ink with watercolor illustrations enhance the text.
