The plot of Charlip's (Fortunately!; Thirteen) very first book, here reissued, is simple: John invites his friends to a dress-up party; as the book unfolds, we see them all arrive, enjoy cake, and then depart. The variation in the costume choices is entertaining, and the page turns flow effortlessly. For Charlip collectors.

Each double-page spread of this pioneering, structurally experimental picture book contains thirteen illustrations, including a numeral counting down with the page turn and a key-like composite image previewing what's to come. The discrete pictures tell cumulative stories and occasionally influence one another's. Per the original review: "The book may have to be introduced to children because it is not immediately obvious. But books that break new ground seldom are."
Reviewer: Elissa Gershowitz

Quiet could replace the word perfect in the title. A child and parent explore all the possibilities of a single day together, taking walks, eating, playing, painting, staring up at the clouds, and contemplating books they've read. The simple rhyming text floats by like a breeze, and the watercolor illustrations gently glow.

Two cowboys lose their beloved cow Grace. After much fruitless searching, both cowboys start crying. Luckily, Grace finds them before Little Old Big Beard drowns in their tears. Using repetition, comparison, and hyperbole, this humorous tale highlights physical characteristics. The book's lanky trim size and watercolor illustrations accentuate the height differences between the two friends.

Charlip's litany of babies is both soothing and fascinating to young children who are drawn to things that are as small as they are. The rhyming text enumerates "baby clouds and baby showers" along with the more usual puppies and kittens. In spite of a slightly forced text, Charlip's pastel watercolors and rounded shapes make this a cozy bedtime book.

Elegant graphics contrast nicely with the action: against a backdrop of William-Morris-style wallpaper, silhouettes of a top-hatted doctor, a long-gowned mother, and a grossly rotund boy demand attention. As the doctor extracts a series of improbable objects, the boy's stomach diminishes. The text generally rhymes, but sometimes not, and mixed meters occasionally jar.

The narrator of this cleverly self-referential book lists her daily schedule from morning to night in order to explain why she can't read the very book the reader has in his or her hands. The text evades potential tedium with visual humor: the fate of the book (left dripping after the shower; forgotten in the fridge at breakfast) is at issue in many of the irreverent color illustrations, each of which contains a clock of some kind.

Focusing on the spread's uses (its history and future are briefly mentioned in jest), right-hand pages offer colorful illustrations and instructions for activities, including party ideas, art projects, and a play--all involving peanut butter and ranging from appetizing to fairly messy. Many will require adult supervision (or at least approval). Left-hand pages feature small drawings with quotes from children.

Childlike watercolor artwork, set against a tranquil purple background, depicts a blissful mother and baby cavorting on a daybed, while outside the window other more whimsical but equally loving parent/child pairings (trees, houses, clouds, etc.) watch. The text hits the familiar "I love you" notes, i.e., "I love your hair / your head / your chin," but the overall result is soothing, not sappy.
