After her father burns their Staten Island commune home to the ground with himself inside, Ror, her mother, and her sister move to unwelcoming 1980s Manhattan. Always an artist herself, Ror meets an African American street artist in a graffiti crew that welcomes her into its ranks. Ror's narration is distant but subtly poignant; Sovak's trippy, graffiti-like illustrations fit Ror's multifaceted artistic identity.

In 1906, Prudence takes a job at the Department of Health and Sanitation, helping track down the origins of a case of typhoid. Prudence's notes and observation lead to the culprit: "Typhoid Mary." Chibbaro keeps readers deeply engaged in Prudence's perceptions and feelings while delicately spinning out the story's threads, weaving real-life events into her fictional main character's tale.

An ambitious first novel postulates English migration to America in the 1520s. Lily's parents have been harboring a rebel cleric when her father, a "religious protester," is abducted and sent to the New World. Hoping to find him, Lily and her mother sail after him. Chibbaro has done her historical homework well. This engrossing adventure is both beautifully written and thought provoking.
