Young Konrad is a product of Hitler's Lebensborn program, designed to refine the Aryan "master race." He's raised without affection in a Nazi orphanage, and at age six, proves himself by helping lure Polish children to Nazi kidnappers. Then he befriends teenage Lukas--blond, blue-eyed, and Jewish--and begins to question Nazi propaganda. Max is no easy read, but the end provides tentative hope.
