On the way to the cave that is her prehistoric clan's "place of magic," young Quennu becomes separated from her companions. Though terrified of meeting a cave bear, she rejoins the clan unharmed, inspired to paint a bear on the cavern wall. While the ending is a bit long, the story, with its dramatic, sketchy artwork, invites readers to speculate about the lives of cave painters.
