Hippopotamus Amos's troubles begin when he hires a tick bird to rid him of biting insects. He finally manages to part ways with what turns out to be an avian Amelia Bedelia, but he becomes an inadvertent surrogate parent to her youngest fledgling. Some sweet or lyric moments will remind newly independent readers of other unusual literary animal friendships. Delicately caricatured line drawings capture the befuddled and then overjoyed Amos.

A series of coded e-mails to their website leads the boys to discover the culprit--whose motivation stretches belief. Though the story is slight, the prose is fast paced and humorous.
