Over the course of forty spreads, readers get a broad idea of what God may be. Each text page begins, "God is..." ("light," "the word," "our tears," etc.); short lines then attempt to explain the ideas (not always successfully). Modern-looking, at times abstract illustrations are child-friendly. Much of the volume is applicable to many faiths; a few spreads delve into Christology.

Delval paraphrases forty Bible stories featuring animals, from God's naming of the creatures to Noah's ark and the Dove of Jesus. Because the summaries are so short it can be hard to grasp what's going on, but the texts are easy to read and could serve as jumping-off points. The volume is well designed; Fronty's illustrations, though a bit static, are eye-pleasing.

Delval relates the main events of nine familiar stories (seven from the Old Testament and two from the New Testament) from "Creation" to "The Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus." The texts are easy to read, but lack of transition between stories leaves the whole feeling a little choppy. Götting's rich-hued illustrations play with light nicely.

This selection of more than three dozen freely paraphrased biblical psalms will be best appreciated if spread out (perhaps one per night), as the messages of reassurance and rejoicing can grow redundant if read in one sitting. The accompanying full-page illustrations, with their artfully evocative images of animals, nature, and children around the world, will draw in young listeners.
