Silver Valley disappears when the magical conch is stolen. To retrieve it, Anand and Nisha (The Conch Bearer, The Mirror of Fire and Dreaming) travel to a place where the air is brown and people breathe through masks. There, they discover how to save their own world. Some plot points are too conveniently resolved in this trilogy ender.

An underappreciated servant for a tea-stall owner, twelve-year-old Anand's kindness toward an old man shifts this novel from reality to fantasy. The old man is returning to its home a miraculous conch that will restore power to the forces of good. With precise language that respectfully evokes an Indian setting both mundane and mysterious, Divakaruni moves us from the marketplace to the land of myth.

Girls of Many Lands series.
After her sister's wedding, Neela, twelve, is next in line for an arranged marriage. Questioning the restrictions on women in 1939 India, Neela finds herself drawn to the incendiary ideas of those fighting for independence from Britain--and taking action when her father disappears during a protest march. Political and social history are awkwardly grafted on, but Neela's defiant spirit helps move the story forward.
