He dreams about her while struggling to focus on exams as his brother, a political prisoner, begins a hunger strike. Parallel themes of sacrifice and resurrection dominate the book's imagery, and the suspense sustains momentum. An author's note gives background.

When twelve-year-old narrator Ted's cousin disappears, he and his sister join forces to solve the conundrum. Ted has Asperger's syndrome, and his hard-wired honesty and never-ending struggle to make sense of the world make him an especially sympathetic character. The mystery itself includes well-embedded clues readers can follow; Ted's literal, logical brain lets him step back to see the solution.

The tiny town of Coolbar in southern Ireland is scandalized when fifteen-year-old Shell Talent becomes pregnant. After the baby is found dead, suspicions abound: Was the father the new young priest? Or worse--Shell's own dad? The story, set in 1984, is evocative of time and place. Shell's confusion and overwhelmingly conflicted emotions will resonate with contemporary readers.
