The lyrics to the Dylan classic run alongside sumptuous acrylics showing a dog parent and child outside, playing hide-and-seek, observing wildlife, etc. Alas, between the arbitrary-seeming repetition ("If not for you... / If not for you...") and lines that don't scan ("I just wouldn't have a clue / Anyway it wouldn't ring true"), the adoring lyrics don't work without music.

Scott Campbell.
Visually interpreting Bob Dylan's whimsical song of the same title, Campbell leads two children and their dog through a fanciful landscape with an ever-increasing number of canine playmates before they make their way home. The gleeful watercolors provide the music to Dylan's (slightly too out-there) lyrics, supporting poetic phrases with tangible images of a world where dogs (and children) do as they please.

Jon J Muth.
Muth offers thought-provoking illustrations for this famous song and the questions it poses about life, though its child appeal is doubtful. He suggests that the "answer blowin' in the wind" is written on paper airplanes gliding through the paintings (but readers aren't privy to what's inscribed). An informative essay provides historical context and explains the song's relevance today. A CD is included.

Jim Arnosky.
Dylan's 1979 song about how various animals got their names features lyrics predestined for a picture book treatment. Arnosky's light-suffused pencil and acrylic illustrations show realistic-looking creatures peacefully coexisting in the verdant wild. A CD of Dylan's song is included.

Paul Rogers.
The song-lyrics-as-picture-book-text trend's latest victim is Dylan's 1974 ode to youthful ideals. The repetitive text just doesn't resonate without a melody. Redeeming the effort are Rogers's funky illustrations, which lovingly track a boy's journey toward becoming a Dylanesque, Greenwich Village musician-activist. Appended illustrator's notes identify the cameo appearances included in the drawings.
