The poems in this posthumous collection evocatively delineate a pastoral, nostalgic conception of a peaceful winter with Christmas its centerpiece. The child-appealing focus on ordinary wonders like frost and footprints in the snow is matched by regular meters and rhyme schemes. Fox-Davies's soft-edged pencil and watercolor illustrations depict snowscapes populated by bundled-up children, along with occasional firelit indoor or muted nighttime scenes.

A seed drops in the soil, a plant grows, a bug eats a leaf, a frog eats the bug--so begins this unflinching account of a food chain. In a poetic text, Fisher carefully controls the pacing; the design also pays attention to the intensity of each action. Stunning paper collage illustrations focus closely on the plants and animals mentioned.

This retrospective of Fisher's poetry affirms why she is still winning fans after almost seventy years of writing. Forty-one lilting poems with easy rhythms are divided into five sections, including "Family and Friends" and "Pets." The fresh, engaging verses focus on topics important to children and capture their sense of wonder about the world. Simple black-and-white drawings are a benign supplement.

A robin flies around the forest finding babies and exclaiming how each looks nothing like its mother: the legless tadpole doesn't resemble a "hoppy frog"; the fuzzy yellow ducklings aren't smooth and white like a duck. Written in prose but rhyming like verse, the text has a lively flow and a satisfying conclusion. The impressionistic paintings balance realism and charm.
