Each of thirteen colorful spreads names one or more gods or goddesses of ancient China (e.g., Guanyin, Goddess of Mercy; Guan Gong, God of War), describes their purviews and perhaps relates an abbreviated story about them, and features a somewhat bland portrait. As a boy stares out to sea from his favorite jetty, a late summer storm creeps up, wreaks havoc, and quickly slips away again. Fisher's characteristic solid forms, with their dramatic play of light and shadow, are the perfect match for the churning seas and skies. The use of chocolate tones lends an appropriately eerie feel. The text is quiet and thoughtful.

The Touro Synagogue in Newport, Rhode Island, was already nearly thirty years old when George Washington visited it in 1790. Handsome black-and-white photographs and prints along with a detailed text highlight individuals and events surrounding the centuries of worldwide discrimination against Jews and describe the long building process, the decline, and the eventual renewal of this historic synagogue. Fisher's warm, storylike text provides a good introduction to the subject, capturing Bell's apparently indefatigable energy and interest in the world around him. The full- and double-page illustrations in this straightforward biography give the text an intimacy and a sense of personal investment on the part of the author-illustrator.
