(4) 1-3 Illustrated by Amy Wummer. When Tiger responds in kind to a classmate's teasing, he is sent out of his favorite art class and given detention. The short chapters and abundant art make the book accessible to young readers, but the story is clichéd--the children end up friends--and none of the characters is much more than a stereotype.

(4) 1-3 Illustrated by Amy Wummer. Already nervous about his first big test, multiracial second-grader Tiger gets upset when he doesn't know what to answer for the question about his race. Though didactic, the story is also humorous--as are the illustrations--and will speak to the feelings of many mixed-race kids.

(4) 1-3 Illustrated by Felicia Marshall. In 1978, ten-year-old Sylvia moves to a small South Carolina town with her mother and befriends their one-hundred-year-old neighbor. Eventually she discovers that her father, whom she believed dead, is alive, and that Miz Lula Maye is actually her great-grandmother. Although most of the plot strains credibility, the intergenerational friendship is endearing and convincing. Black-and-white illustrations accompany the text.
