"My dad thinks he's funny. When people say, 'How are you feeling?' Dad says, 'With my hands.'" There are two dozen of these jokes, and they are funny, as are the mixed-media illustrations, which include a diagram showing readers how to do "the eye roll." Not so funny? Germein's decision to end on a dull note despite the humor that preceded it.

In the dry Australian outback, Old Stephen predicts rain on Sunday. Each day of the week passes, but the rain doesn't come until Saturday. Though the plot lacks tension, the vibrant, stylized gouache and acrylic illustrations, with the Aboriginal symbol of the Rainbow Serpent as a repeated motif, compel attention. Well-chosen details in the sparse text convey context superbly.
