"The thing is, / the thing is green. / And the green is, / the green is green." So begins this occasionally haltingly written book-length riddle, which will reward persistence. Texturally sumptuous mixed-media-collage illustrations usher readers through a luscious exploration of things green ("Think rolling-waves-of-grain green / thick green vines / climbing high") until they reach Big Green itself (the earth).

Moxy's piano recital is imminent, and her teacher fears that she'll perform "Heart and Soul" endlessly (Moxy: "If I play it the regular way it doesn't give me much time to be onstage"). As in the aptly named Moxy's first two vehicles, the omniscient narrator is hilariously dominating. Intentionally inexpert black-and-white photos, ostensibly taken by Moxy's twin brother, enhance the humor.

Her mother warns that unless Moxy finishes her Christmas thank-you notes before visiting her father in LA, there will be "consequences." Moxy pursues her typical rounds of procrastination, daydreaming, and scheming, and mayhem eventually ensues. Amusing photographs (putatively taken by Moxy's twin brother) enhance many of the funniest moments, and playful chapter titles foreshadow upcoming mini-disasters.

Tomorrow is the first day of school. Nine-year-old Moxy still hasn't started her summer assignment--to read Stuart Little--and she's running out of excuses. This original story features a chatty omniscient narrator, faux-amateur black-and-white photos (ostensibly taken by Moxy's twin brother), and a spunky, creative protagonist whose name is well matched to her spirited personality.
