A circus bear must dance for crowds that often ill-treat her. Finally she rebels: she runs away (here the story becomes wordless) and climbs a pole that takes her to the sky, where, in a terrific turn, she becomes the constellation Ursa Major. Greder's blacks and browns capture the coldness of the medieval milieu and the townspeople's hearts.

When Amy wants to play with her best friend, Louie, she calls out their special word--"Coo-ee"--and Louie calls Amy the same way. When Amy's family moves, the two are miserable until they figure out how to communicate "half a world away." Blackwood's atmospheric illustrations are a good match for the mood of the story.

Early in the morning, two siblings head down the hall to the "monster's cave," a tangle of blankets and snoring and hairy feet--and, when parents wake up, lots and lots of cuddling. The compact, rhythmic text is laden with ear-pleasing assonance and internal rhyme. Vivas's cherubically drawn children and soft lighting evoke the cozy morning hours.
