Fifteen-year-old Maddie hates her flighty single mother's latest idea for a mother-daughter summer "adventure"--a week working at an organic farm--especially since it interferes with an art contest that could take Maddie to New York City. Once on the farm, Maddie is surprised to make new friends and gain inspiration. A quick, predictable read filled with clichés but nevertheless entertaining.

As an alternative to juvenile detention, petty thief Mike is placed in Explore, a program that teaches responsibility through outdoor activity. At first skeptical of the "Granolas" who like rock-climbing and back-country skiing, Mike soon discovers a safe place to grow. The swift plot rushes through the short chapters, but the first-person perspective allows Mike's character to develop.
