In this second series installment (The Snips: A Bad Buzz Day, rev. 3/25), the barbershop superheroes prepare for “Wigmania,” a gala to celebrate the opening of their latest Snipseum exhibit on “Wigstory.” Unfortunately, the mysterious Wigmaster from the first book’s finale has deployed his wig-making skills for evil. With the hair he collected from Hairthing (who is now an adorable member of the Snips), he has created mind-control wigs to help him steal the wigs from the Snipseum and, eventually, take over the world. Using hypnotizing beats and his robot-like Wignions, he steals Flealix’s watch, gaining access to Tijera Tower and capturing almost all the Snips on the night of the gala. It’s up to Flealix and Casco, luckily immune from the Wigmaster’s tools, to save the day. Just as delightfully kooky as the first book, this sequel is filled with action, jokes, and inventive new characters (e.g., Fleazle the “AI micro-fleabot,” who protects Flealix from pests with his rough-and-tumble attitude). As always, Raúl the Third’s illustrations, including several impressive double-page spreads, are chockablock with energetic details, jolted to life by an electric palette. Flealix fans will love seeing him get a main-character treatment (and getting a glimpse into his surreal, larger-than-life bag); readers in general will be happy to learn that a third book is in the works.
