"I have wheels. / I can take you far. / I have pedals you must push." From these clues, readers must guess "What am I?" from a five-item list; a facing-page illustration offers additional hints, and the following page announces and elaborates on the answer. A cheery, round-faced boy takes readers through seven rounds of this to the book's unceremonious end.

Humorous cartoon illustrations on every page liven up a rather bland volume on suffrage and the electoral process. Examples taken from history or from a hypothetical presidential race demonstrate the party system, presidential slogans, and political vocabulary. The 2000 election gets mild treatment. Throughout the (somewhat overlong) book, students are urged to get involved. Glos., ind.

It's rare that veteran's war stories make it out of the VFW Post and into juvenile literature, and Granfield has used thirty of them to give a picture of "the Forgotten War." While the accounts are often vivid, the events of the war itself are less so and not always clear; readers might be best served by supplementing the book with a straightforward history text. Snapshots of the veterans are included, as is a foreword by Russell Freedman giving his own Korean War story.

With a distinctly Canadian viewpoint, this is an albumlike overview of the Great War both in the trenches and at home. Although each themed double-page spread contains intriguing reproductions of period photos, posters, and documents, the focus is simply too broad to be effective. Granfield's previous In Flanders Fields: The Story of the Poem by John McCrae is a better introduction. Ind.

In this retelling of a Chinese folktale, Dolma, a shepherdess in the mountains of China, befriends a white panda cub. When a snow leopard attacks the cub, Dolma gives up her own life to defend it. In mourning her death, the pandas smear themselves with ash, creating the familiar black-and-white markings. Detailed paintings evoke the lush setting. An author's note provides information about conservation efforts.

Illustrated with reproductions of early artifacts and drawings along with modern photographs of present-day circuses, the book is filled with colorful memorabilia. Sections for each of the circus spectacles provide information on clown training, performing animals, acrobats, and trapeze artists, as well as brief biographies of the more famous performers. An excellent overview of a popular entertainment. Ind.
